7 Ways You Can Lose Weight and Keep it Off!

Saturday, March 7, 2009

If you're one of the millions of Americans who have struggled with their weight, you've probably tried to lose those extra pounds....and you probably did....only to gain them back again!

It's time to put an end to the yo-yo dieting and the New Year's resolutions that were never resolved! Follow these 7 tips and you'll begin to lose weight and keep it off!

1) Stop counting calories!---Believe it or not, when you restrict your calories your body goes into a kind of "starvation mode" slowing down your metabolism. Your body doesn't know that you have cabinets and refrigerators filled with food. It needs to hold onto that energy....by storing it as fat!

2) Don't skip meals!---Skipping breakfast is the worst! Your body hasn't been fed in 9 or 10 hours....talk about going into "starvation mode!" Skipping breakfast is a one way ticket to fat storage city!

3) Eat "Slow Carbs"---Foods like potatoes, rice, white bread, and candy bars have a high "glycemic index," meaning they cause an immediate spike in your blood sugar levels.....your body says to itself, "Give me a break! You're not going to use all of this sugar for energy!" and it stores most of it as fat. The secret is to eat "low glycemic" carbohydrates and foods high in fiber. Some of the best information on low glycemic foods can be found in Dr. Shari Lieberman's book "Dare to Lose."

4) Get off the "sweet stuff"---Not only do sweet foods spike your blood sugar levels, they also harm your body's ability to know when you've had enough to eat....You don't believe me? Watch how many candy bars and Mountain Dew's most kids will absorb given the chance! You think they need all that food for energy?!?

5) Move your butt!---Like I said before, if you're not using energy your body knows it! Instead of sending those calories (energy) to your muscles where they can be used, it will store them as fat! This doesn't mean you have to spend 3 hours a day at the gym...just go for a walk after dinner!

6) Pump some iron!---Muscle burns calories....even when you're not exercising! If you've gone on a meal replacement or calorie restricting diet in the past, you're now fatter than you were when you started! You lost weight as "calorie burning" muscle and regained it as "dead weight" fat! Do some strength exercises and start to get your metabolism back!

7) Relax!---When you get stressed out your body goes into "fight or flight" mode, causing it to release a bunch of glucose (sugar) into the blood stream for an immediate burst of energy. Since you're probably not trying to run away from a lion, or kill a gorilla with your bare hands, your body is not going to use that glucose for energy. Guess what it's going to do?...That's right...store it as fat!

With all these calorie restriction diets, sugary foods, and sit down jobs, many of us have become "metabolically challenged" over the years. Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to getting your metabolism working again so you can finally lose weight and keep it off!
